Demolition Project Rolling Along at Brunswick Landing and Topsham Commerce Park

Urban Renewal Continues

As part of its redevelopment mission, MRRA will level approximately 95,748 SF during the removal of 20 buildings from the former Naval Air Station Brunswick and Topsham Annex in 2014. These structures range in size from 25,000 SF to only 42 SF and include an assortment of former military buildings that have been determined to be unsuitable for civilian reuse.

We’ve made good progress so far. At Topsham Commerce Park, demolition of four buildings, totaling nearly 22,000 SF was completed in just over a week — very soon after MRRA received the property via Economic Development Conveyance from the Navy. The contractor, McGee Construction of Gardiner, moved across the river to Brunswick Landing and leveled the former Navy ranch-style houses on the east side of Admiral Fitch Ave. in just three days! They’ve since moved up the street to the Airport and demo-ed the former fuel farm gas station and the Oxygen Shop.

Another 26,026 SF of airport property awaits the wrecking ball, while just under 40,000 SF is due to be leveled on non-airport property. Overall, about the third of the demo work has wrapped up. While it’s sad, in some cases, to see some of these buildings go, it’s exciting to think of the possibilities for redeveloping the land they were sited on.

A grant from the Economic Development Administration was used to fund 50 percent of this $500,000 project. MRRA is funding the other half.
