The Harpswell Garden Club will dedicate the first Gold Star Families Memorial Marker in Maine. The event is on Saturday, June 23, at 10:00 a.m. at the P-3 Park at Brunswick Landing. The public is invited to attend.
This Gold Star Memorial Marker will be the first in the state of Maine! The Gold Star Memorial Marker program pays tribute to those servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country. Following the dedication of the Gold Star Memorial Marker, the Brunswick Naval Museum will host a 50th anniversary celebration of the Memorial Gardens, followed by a reception in the museum. Senator Angus King has been invited to serve as the guest speaker.
Gold Star Families are those who have lost a loved one in service to our country through the United States Armed Forces. All family members representing all conflicts, all branches of service and all circumstances of death are supported.
While their hero paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, survivors live daily with the pain of this sacrifice. The name Gold Star came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a service flag in the window of their homes. The service flag had a star for each family member in the United States Armed Forces. Living servicemen were represented by a Blue Star, and those who had lost their lives were represented by a Gold Star.
